Last night I went to Nightmare: Ghost Stories, one of the city's super-hyped and popular haunted house Halloween attractions, with the girls from the office. Let's put it this way - the most frightening part of the evening was taking the subway to the Lower East Side.
What it lacked in actual scariness and gross-out factor it made up for in suspense. We kept waiting to get a really big rush out of it. There were lots of dark rooms and tight corners. It was really hot, stuffy and claustrophobic. And about halfway through I lost my enthusiasm and couldn't wait for it to be over just so that I could get outside and into some cool, fresh air and head off to the pub with the girls for a beer.
In other words, the whole thing was like really bad sex.

Posted by: Faustus, M.D. at October 28, 2007 8:07 AMOnly did the subway to the Lower East Side one time and it was not so bad, but you are right on about the bad sex. Fortunately, I can say I've never had bad sex anywhere in New York - possibly because I'm an Empire State virgin.

Posted by: Maxine Dangerous at November 1, 2007 10:55 AMI went out for Halloween with my nephews, aged 10 and 12.
They live in an upscale neighborhood, and the outdoor Halloween decorations were impressive. There were mechanical ghosts, half-buried skeletons and even a fog machine. The kids were not impressed.
It reminded me of when I was a boy, and our school set up a "haunted house" in the gym. They blindfolded us and stuck our hands in bowls of spaghetti, telling us it was blood and guts. We were scared.
