Last night, K. was surfing the Internet and discovered that a 1982 Saturday Night Live episode was going to be airing at three in the morning, featuring musical guest Jennifer Holiday performing songs from Dreamgirls. He nearly peed his pants with joy.
For those of you who don't know, K. is obsessed with Dreamgirls and all things Jennifer Holiday. Hardly a day goes by when the Dreamgirls performance from the 1982 Tony Awards show isn't played in this house (which is actually rather spectacular...check it out and stick with it all the way to the end). And you should hear his rendition of "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going". It's nothing short of stunning.
K. was chatting online with a few of friends and excitedly told them about the SNL airing. One of them said, "Your obsession with Jennifer Holiday and Dreamgirls is so gay. It's about as gay as you can be."
To which K. replied, "Excuse me. You're the one always talking about how much you want to be the submissive blindfolded bottom in a huge anonymous group gang bang. I think that's about as gay as you can."
And they argued their points back and forth for the next hour.
So here's my question for you, dear readers. Which is, in fact, gayer: an overwhelming Jennifer Holiday/Dreamgirls obsession, or a blindfolded bottom gang bang fantasy scenario?

"Gay" is a whole culture, not just sexual activity, so while the blindfolded gang-bang fantasy might be gay, it's still based on sex. So my vote goes with K. (Not that there's anything WRONG with that ... )

You could have the Jennifer Holiday/Dreamgirls obsession and still be straight (as unlikely as that might be), but the bottom fantasy? That puts you pretty solidly in the gay camp! :)

I saw Jennifer live at a gay nightclub in the late 80s and you know what was really annoying to me (and I am sure K. will agree)? Queens walking up to the stage and laying down tips as if she were a drag queen! The disgrace!!! I was ashamed to be from that town. What, she needed the lousy one-dollar bills they were tossing her way? Talk about no respect! They should have been laying down 100s when she sang And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going, because she tore the place up. She also performed a slow, powerful version of One Night Only with a sly quip at the beginning about how it was her song before it was Deena's.
I'd love to hear K.'s version of I'm Not Going -that song kicks Curtis Taylor, Jr.'s ass!
I think the gangbang scenario is gayer, but that's me.

I saw Jennifer do a musical in Atlanta called "Sing Mahalia Sing" based on the life of Mahalia Jackson. It was so great I went back a second time. It opened and closed on Broadway in a matter of minutes. I have forever looked for a recording of the music, but nothing so far. She is incredible.
I can't even say. Everything inside the higher echelon of Gay starts to blur a certain point.
I was watching that exact clip one time, and my boyfriend asked me, "Who's that?" It was the most ignorant thing that'd ever come out of his mouth, and I almost snatched out one of his eyes on the spot for it.

Your story reminds me of the movie Jeffrey, where Patrick Stewart (Sterling) is addressing Bryan Batt (Darius), his much younger (and more naive) partner, in one of my all-time favorite movie dialogues:
Darius: Who's Martha Stewart?
Sterling: She writes picture books about gracious living. Martha says that nothing else matters if you can do a nice dried floral arrangement. I worship her.
Darius: And, um, who's Ann Miller?
Sterling: Leave this house.
Okay, so maybe that beats Jennifer and the gangbang. :)
