This And That

Fort Lauderdale is squared away. Airfare, hotel, rental car...check, check, check. Thanks to those who provided info and insight. I'll think of you as I work on my tan.

I just finished watching Walk The Line and was mostly underwhelmed. Perhaps it's because I can only handle so much country music in one sitting, or perhaps it's because by the fourth scene I was already over Joaquin Phoenix. The movie never landed emotionally for me. That being said, I agree with the critics that Reese Witherspoon was excellent - definitely deserving of her Oscar nomination. But I was more affected on the whole by Felicity Huffman's performance in Transamerica and would have given her the statuette.

Half of my department spent the lunch hour in the video conference room watching the NCAA tournament. Apparently the turnout of the office pool totally hinged on the BC/Pacific game. So when it went into sudden double overtime, the video conference room was abandoned in favor of the pub down the street. I've never seen a group of accountants run so fast in my life.

Nobody asked me if I wanted to participate in the pool, much less join the sudden overtime pub run, but it doesn't bug me. Besides, if they asked me to join their NCAA pool then I'd have to ask them to join my Tony Awards pool. And being the only person in that pool I totally have the edge.

The president's approval rating is at its lowest point ever. The federal government is raising the debt limit and squandering away millions of dollars in Hurricane Katrina relief funds. Carla Jean Martin is screwing up terrorist trials. Saddam Hussein thinks he's still the president of Iraq. Airports are failing security tests all over the nation. Brad and Angelina may or may not be getting married yesterday, today or never.

The world is in total turmoil. Chaos everywhere we look. And yet what most terrifies me is the idea of a Josh Groban/Bette Midler stage musical. You know, just in case you weren't sure that the end is near.

Thanks for sharing the news of the coming apocalypse just as the weekend gets started. May your sunscreen in Florida offer you no protection.

So - where are you going to stay in Fort Lauderdale?

I am in complete agreement about Felicity and Transamerica. I also think it was a better film than "Crash", although I did enjoy the latter.
