In case you don't live in New York City, or in case you live under a rock in New York City, you might not be aware that my favorite holiday is upon us -- Fleet Week!
Fleet Week is that magical time of year when thousands upon thousands of sailors converge on the island of Manhattan, parade around in all of their uniformed glory, and release their repressed homosexual cravings in the back rooms of the darkest gay bars make us proud to be Americans. It's truly a sight to behold. And no matter how many times we giggle at the sexual innuendo of Navy jokes it just never gets old.
Times Square is the epicenter of Fleet Week, and fortunately I work smack in the heart of it. Even the grey, damp gloom of these springtime nor'easters can't keep these boys from strutting their stuff about town...or stop me from taking extended lunch breaks and following them.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to don my dickie and rubbers and go in search of some seamen.

Posted by: Hanuman at May 26, 2005 2:51 PMI like New York in May - How about you?
I like each Fleet Week day - How about you?
I love tight Navy Whites, bulges showing through.
I like their pouty lips, uniforms, slender hips - How about you?
Yeah . . . I'm bored.

Posted by: Jenn at May 26, 2005 4:04 PMLet's not forget, gentle barn-readers, MAK has a sailor outfit and he wears it during fleet week, pretending to be a drunken sailor (well, pretending about the sailor part).

Posted by: bob at May 27, 2005 8:35 AMHere in San Francisco, Fleet Week is in October, usually a few days before my birthday, and the Navy is thoughtful enough to supply boatloads of sailors to help celebrate with me. Good times, good times.
Posted by: Todd at May 27, 2005 6:59 PMIt was Genet who said that Navy Whites were "the most erotic garment ever devised." Do tell, Michelle!
The climax (in every sense of the term) of my memoir-in-progress, Raised by Hand Puppets concerns a late-afternoon-stretching-into-evening I spent with a sailor in the Rambles some 38-odd years ago. He was the most sublime exhibitionist I've ever known.
Ah Fleet Week!
Movies designed for the occasion: On the Town, Querelle, Lola, and Decision Before Dawn with Bill Williams resplendent in his Navy Whites.
Posted by: David Ehrenstein at May 27, 2005 8:09 PMWhat's "Fleet Week" without Paul Cadmus?
Posted by: David Ehrenstein at May 27, 2005 8:46 PMI've really got to plan my trips to NYC better.
Of course, every day is hot-men-in-uniform day where I live. Wanna visit?
