A sick day for me results in a very rare event: K. and I home, and awake, at the same time. With my 10-6 schedule and his theater schedule, common awake time can be very elusive. Despite not feeling up to speed, I decided to take advantage of the situation yesterday and get out of bed to keep K. company before he headed off to his matinee.
After I called the office to confirm that I wouldn't be in, I sat down next to K. on the couch. He was checking his e-mails and IMing on his laptop. The television was already on, and he was otherwise engaged, so I picked up the remote control and started flipping channels.
"Um, what are you doing there, honey?" he asked.
"It's Ellen hour," I said. "Why, what did you want to watch?"
"Ten o'clock is the first Dawson's Creek episode of the day."
"Oh, sorry," I should have known better; every day K. and his friend T., who lives in Virginia, watch Creek reruns and call each other to discuss the latest developments (I know - best not to question these things). "Well here, turn it on."
"No, no, just watch your Ellen. It's your sick day. It's fine." His tone wasn't entirely convincing. I kept Ellen on anyway.
Later, as he was getting ready for work, I followed him from the shower to his closet to the ironing board to the kitchen and back to the bedroom. I asked questions about what his day would be like, if he wanted anything special from the store when I went out for orange juice and Jell-O, and an assortment of other trivial topics.
Finally, he turned to me and said, "Okay, stop it, you're freaking me out."
"What do you mean?"
"I'm not used to you being here in the morning when I'm getting ready."
"That's not true," I countered. "I'm here on Saturday and Sunday mornings when you have work."
"That's different. I know you'll be here. And you usually don't care or you're still in bed. Today you're following me around like a puppy."
"I just thought I'd get a few extra minutes with you today."
"Mmhmm," he said as he went in search of his shoes. "More like you just want to be babied because that's what you do when you don't feel well, and you want all the attention."
"Well, I..." I was speechless for a moment. Then I collected myself and batted my eyelashes as sweetly as I could. "Is that so wrong?"
Posted by mak at June 24, 2004 11:20 AMNo you should rate higher than re runs of a marginal show.
When you're sick? It's ALL about you dear. You make sure K knows that. ;) I usually want to be left alone when I'm sick, but when I have a boyfriend it's a completely different story. It's what they're there for.
Don't make me call him!
Posted by: mark at June 24, 2004 11:58 AMI'm sorry, I couldn't read past "Dawson's Creek." But I hope you're feeling better.
XO. No, wait. Just O. Heh.
Posted by: Frank Beekman at June 24, 2004 12:26 PMawwww....honey, if I was there, I'd give you oodles of attention. And Matzoh ball soup. (no offense to K)
Posted by: zenchick at June 24, 2004 2:02 PMOh, he gives me the attention, don't worry. I'm too obnoxious about it to be ignored. :)
Posted by: MAK at June 24, 2004 2:05 PMUmmm..there is so nothing wrong with wanting all the attention. Lord knows, as an only child, I have that one down! And why only do it when you are sick? All the time honey!
Achmed's Creek (remember) ... ha!
